Klaviyo Popup Setup 2026: 6-12% Signup Conversion
Share
A well-configured Shopify newsletter popup captures 2–4% of mobile visitors and 1.5–3% of desktop visitors. Incentive matters more than copy: a 10% off first order converts at 2.5%, a 15% off converts at 3.8%, a free guide converts at 1.8% but attracts higher-quality leads. The popup is the faucet that fills your email list — without it, welcome flow and abandoned cart work at 10% of their potential.

This guide is for founders with a popup live who don't know if it works, or who need to launch one for the first time. Written for US/UK Shopify DTC brands using Klaviyo, with portfolio benchmarks and copy that converts.
The strategic role of the popup
The popup is the only touchpoint that converts an anonymous visitor into an identified contact. Without a popup, 98%+ of Shopify traffic leaves without a trace and can't be reached again. With a popup at 3% conversion rate, on 10,000 monthly visitors you add 300 subscribers worth:
- Welcome flow: $4–$8 RPR → $1,200–$2,400 incremental revenue
- Future campaigns over 6 months: ~$2,500–$5,000 additional revenue from those subscribers
Total: $3,500–$7,000 monthly generated from a popup that costs zero. This is the ROI that makes the popup the first asset to build, before any sophisticated flow.
The 4 incentives that work
1. Fixed first-order discount (10–15%)
The classic. Works on brands with AOV $40–$120. Typical conversion rate: 2.5–3.8%. Copy example: "10% off your first order. Subscribe to receive it."
Pro: universal, easy to understand. Con: burns margin if you don't optimize. If 80% of first orders are below AOV, a 10% discount eats margin.
2. Free shipping
Works on brands with high free-shipping threshold ($60–$100). Conversion rate: 2–3%. Copy: "Free shipping on your first order".
Pro: doesn't drop the product price — preserves positioning. Con: less powerful as perceived incentive vs 10–15% off.
3. Free guide or resource
PDF, video, mini-course. Works on high-AOV brands ($100+) or educational positioning (skincare, supplements, hobby). Conversion rate: 1.5–2.5%. Copy: "Download the guide 'How to Pick Your Skin Routine' — 12 free pages".
Pro: higher-quality lead, no margin-eroding discount, signals expertise. Con: requires real value content. A 1-page PDF doesn't convert.
4. Lottery / giveaway
Entry to a monthly giveaway. Conversion rate: 3–5% (high), but lead quality low. Copy: "Subscribe and win a [product] set worth $200".
Pro: high subscriber volume. Con: a portion of subscribers are sweepstake-chasers — high unsubscribe post-event.
The most common copy errors
Five recurring patterns we see:
- Generic CTA: "Subscribe to the newsletter". No value prop. Conversion drops.
- Hidden incentive: discount in the 7th line of the popup. Visitor doesn't read, closes.
- Phone field required in step 1. Increases friction by 40–60%, slashing email opt-in rate.
- Two email fields in UI: "email" + "confirm email". Useless, makes the form feel long.
- Non-credible promise: "Subscribe to receive exclusive updates!" — empty, generic. Nobody subscribes.
Opening timing: when to show the popup
Three typical timings, with different conversion rates:
- Immediate (0–3 seconds): 1.5–2.2%. Aggressive, but the visitor hasn't seen anything of the brand yet.
- Scroll 40–60% of page: 2.5–3.5%. Sweet spot. Visitor has shown engagement.
- Exit intent (desktop only): 1.8–2.8%. Catches those about to close.
- Time on page (10–30 seconds): 2.2–3.2%. Alternative to scroll for short pages.
On our clients we typically set scroll 50% for desktop and time 15 seconds for mobile (exit intent doesn't work on mobile). A/B test after the first 30 days to find your sweet spot.
Klaviyo technical setup (quick steps)

- Klaviyo → Sign-up Forms → Create Form → Modal with Image template.
- Heading copy: clear value in 5–7 words ("10% off your first order").
- Body copy: 1–2 lines on the brand + promise.
- Email field required, phone field optional with separate SMS checkbox (TCPA-compliant — SMS opt-in must be distinct from email opt-in).
- CTA button with action verb ("Yes, send me 10%").
- Trigger: Scroll 50% on desktop, Time 15 seconds on mobile.
- Frequency: show once per day if not filled, don't show again after submit or after 3 dismissals.
- Target list: main marketing list (the one that triggers welcome flow).
- Test: in incognito, verify it appears at the right timing and submit ties back to Klaviyo.
- Activate.
Conversion rate benchmarks by category
Across our 2026 portfolio, popup conversion rate benchmarks:
| Brand category | CR desktop | CR mobile |
|---|---|---|
| Women's fashion | 2.2–3.2% | 3.0–4.2% |
| Men's fashion | 1.8–2.5% | 2.2–3.0% |
| Skincare / beauty | 2.8–4.0% | 3.5–4.8% |
| Supplements / wellness | 2.5–3.5% | 3.0–4.0% |
| Home / furniture | 1.5–2.2% | 1.8–2.8% |
| Food & beverage | 2.0–2.8% | 2.5–3.5% |
Below the minimum range, you have work to do. Between min and max, OK but room to improve. Above max, excellent — focus on the flows receiving this traffic.
A/B tests that produce real lift
What to test, in priority order:
- Incentive: 10% vs 15% vs free shipping. Single highest-impact test for CR.
- Opening timing: scroll 30% vs 50% vs 70%, time 10s vs 20s.
- Heading copy: value-prop-first vs benefit-first vs urgency.
- CTA color: contrast with background. A high-contrast button converts +10–25%.
- Mobile vs desktop layout: some popups that convert on desktop flop on mobile. Separate the configurations.
Wait 7–14 days of testing for statistical significance. Minimum 300–500 visits per variant.
Two-step popup: email + SMS at separate steps
Advanced pattern: email collection in the first popup, separate SMS popup 48 hours later with additional incentive. Results:
- Email opt-in (popup 1): 3.2%
- SMS opt-in (popup 2, among those who gave email): 18–25%
Total: 0.6–0.8% of visitors becomes an SMS contact. Sounds small, but the SMS list costs management and has huge ROI on high-intent segments. For US TCPA compliance details, see SMS Marketing for Shopify.
FAQ
When should I show the popup?
Sweet spot: scroll 40–60% of page on desktop, time 10–20 seconds on mobile. Immediate converts less (user not engaged), exit intent is good backup on desktop. Test on your brand in the first 30 days.
How many required fields can the popup have?
One (email) is ideal. Adding phone as optional doesn't reduce the email conversion rate. Making phone required reduces it by 40–60%. If you need phone, do it in step 2 after email submit.
One popup or multiple per page?
One active popup per user. If you show multiple different popups, the user dismisses them all. If you have different popups per segment (e.g. one for new visitors, one for returning), use conditional logic inside Klaviyo: one popup activates per user with different copy based on flag.
Does the popup hurt SEO?
Google since 2017 penalizes intrusive popups on mobile that cover the entire page "annoyingly". Respectful popups (easy to close, not full-screen, reasonable trigger) have no SEO impact. Verify your popup doesn't appear instantly and has a visible X to close.
How long should the popup discount code last?
Typically 7–14 days. Beyond, the customer forgets it; below, generates excessive anxiety. In the welcome flow, email 5 "last chance" refreshes the deadline and generates final conversion. The deadline should be clearly communicated in the popup and in every welcome email.
